I CHANGED MY MIND THIS MIX IS THE WORST
a lot of the criticism regarding Kirsten’s portrayal of Mary Jane in the Sam Raimi movies begins with “but she didn’t do anything, she was just there to be kidnapped all the time,” and while i do see where that comes from i also think that people misunderstand the character and the story, and are nitpicky thanks to this new trend of Strong Female Characters™.
what people have to understand is that Mary Jane is only human in a world of superheroes and super villains (who usually also happen to be geniuses), and there is only so much a regular person with no extraordinary abilities can do in these circumstances. yes, perhaps the director could’ve not had her be kidnapped in all three movies, but that’s not necessarily the character’s fault. she was involved with Peter and his enemies were all close to him, best friend’s fathers, teacher’s friends, best friends, and figured out who Spider-Man was and that she was a way for them to get to him.
Mary Jane, though not necessarily resembling a lot of her original 616 persona, was a great, layered, real character in the previous Spidey trilogy. she didn’t physically kick ass (well, she actually did at least once each movie, but people tend to purposefully overlook or downplay that) or had witty, memorable lines, and she could be annoying and unreasonable, but so could Peter. and he was. but somehow he gets away with it because “he’s only human” and she gets to be called a “bitch.” Peter can go and kiss his best friend’s girlfriend, and cheat on his girlfriend, and keep secrets from everyone while shaming them for not being 100% truthful towards him, and still gets to be the hero. but Mary Jane dates four guys in a five-year period and she’s a slut. she pursues her career and has ups and downs in it and is whiny. gets upset over being cheated on and having her boyfriend become a big-headed jerk and she’s a bitch. there’s something very telling in that; that the guy can not be perfect and it’s normal, but as soon as a woman isn’t, there’s something wrong with her and therefore she should be dismissed.
a female character doesn’t automatically become a damsel in distress the second she gets in harm’s way — a damsel is someone whose only purpose is to be kidnapped and saved and push the hero’s story forward while having none of her own, and Mary Jane wasn’t that. she had her own arc, much more so that a lot of characters in many superhero movies as of late. a good female character doesn’t have to be a badass, and try to fight the villain even though she has no powers, and be courageous, and smart, and funny, and charming, and beautiful, and caring, and sweet, she has to be real. i don’t identify with perfect characters, and i know i speak for everyone on this. i don’t sympathize and empathize with a story or someone who never has problems and is perfect all the time.
we need to reevaluate the way we see and judge female characters. there’s nothing wrong in disliking a character, sometimes it just doesn’t click, or we think the portrayal is not very good, we have a gripe with the actor, or the writing, but when it’s because we hold that character to weird, unattainable standards that we don’t apply to any others and it becomes a personal vendetta like it has with Kirsten’s MJ — twelve years after the first movie people still have this red-hot hate towards her — it stops being just a matter of different strokes and becomes harmful.
and, quite frankly, pretty insufferable.
for chinese new year they get all these famous actors and comedians together and they do a lil show and one of the comedians was like “i was in a hotel in america once and there was a mouse in my room so i called reception except i forgot the english word for mouse so instead i said ‘you know tom and jerry? jerry is here’
