oh! um. well. I’m going to end up seeing it, because my friend Dean is going to see it and he asked for moral support (he’s one of those people who insists the prequels don’t exist and he’s read like, all of the EU and owns most of the books himself). My own personal opinion? I’m fond of the OT but not particularly obsessed with it (I didn’t see any of them until I was 16), and if the new movie(s) turn out well, I’ll be happy. I’m really curious about the various female roles (especially Lupita’s) and how that might help with the really unfortunate dude-centric trend of the movieverse (as I understand, the EU was better about this).
BUT. oh god. JJ Abrams is one of the worst people I can think of to be doing Star Wars and I do not have good feelings about him being at the helm at all. Not that I have cause to be worried from personal experience, except that I’ve seen so many of my Star Trek friends get pissed off about his handling of Star Trek and I know what a huge mess those movies were, narratively and in regards to social topics. I did like Super 8 though? so maybe it’ll be closer to that, I hope.
tl;dr I don’t really have much personal stake in this and I won’t be torn up if it’s awful because I don’t have high hopes, but I do want it to be good.
